Telkomsel, Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (IOH), and XLSMART have officially launched the joint Telco API (Application Programming Interface) Alliance initiative, aimed at accelerating the standardization of Telco API protocols in Indonesia. Through this alliance, the three operators have agreed to adopt a unified Telco API protocol based on the international CAMARA standard, enabling easier, safer, and more inclusive integration between each operator’s ecosystem and various applications across Indonesia’s digital landscape.

Telkomsel’s Director of Planning and Transformation, Wong Soon Nam stated, “This collaboration stems from a shared commitment to advancing together in building a strong and sustainable national digital ecosystem. Through the Telco API Alliance, Telkomsel reaffirms its consistency in leveraging the latest technology to deliver solutions that benefit the Indonesian people, particularly in protecting them from digital crime. This effort also reflects Telkomsel’s commitment to creating more opportunities for society to be increasingly competitive in the digital era.”

Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison’s Director and Chief Business Officer, M Danny Buldansyah, said, “This collaboration is a tangible example of the commitment of Indonesia’s telecommunications operators to strengthening the country’s economic growth through technology and digitalization. It is part of Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison’s ongoing journey to deliver world-class digital experiences, connecting and empowering the people of Indonesia.”

XLSMART’s Director & Chief Enterprise Strategic Relationship Officer, Andrijanto Muljono, remarked, “Joining the Telco API Alliance is an important step for XLSMART in delivering more inclusive and secure digital innovations. We believe this collaboration will open opportunities for the creation of new, impactful solutions while enhancing the competitiveness of Indonesia’s telecommunications industry in the digital era.” Andrijanto added that this strategic collaboration underscores the commitment of Indonesia’s telecommunications operators not only to provide reliable connectivity but also to build a safer and more sustainable digital ecosystem, “we hope the Telco API Alliance will serve as a catalyst for strategic collaborations in delivering cutting-edge digital services and driving new breakthroughs.”

Benefits of the Telco API Alliance
The Telco API Alliance between Telkomsel, IOH, and XLSMART will gradually introduce six solutions, most of which focus on enhancing customer protection against account hacking or fraud. The six solutions are:

  • Telco API Active Inactive – Checks the active status of a number and customer registration.
  • Telco API MNV – Validates devices through number and network verification.
  • Telco API SIM Swap – Detects suspicious SIM card activity to prevent number hijacking and account takeovers.
  • Telco API Device Location – Verifies device location within a specific geographic range.
  • Telco API Recycle Number – Verifies ownership changes to prevent misuse of recycled numbers.
  • Telco API Scam Signal – Analyzes data networks in real time to detect potential fraudulent fund transfers in business transactions.

The signing of the Telco API Alliance Memorandum of Understanding follows the GSMA Open Gateway initiative agreed upon by Telkomsel, IOH, and XLSMART on 21 February 2024. This initiative provides a framework that enables application developers to access mobile operators’ networks more easily, accelerating the growth and innovation of digital services.
