Faiveley Transport platform doors for the Seville metro
To highlight its intention to set itself apart in the fields of service quality and passenger safety, the city of Seville has decided to equip its metro line with platform doors. In this context, Faiveley was able to make all the difference, thanks to its reputation in the railway equipment field and its ability to provide a turnkey solution, overcoming the usual difficulties concerning interfacing between the trains and the platform door system (train-wayside communication).
There is increasing demand for platform doors, and Faiveley Transport holds a commanding position in the field. The solution significantly enhances passenger safety and service quality. Although the vast majority of new metro lines are equipped with efficient signalling systems, platform doors are the only systems enabling travellers' environments to be managed in full safety. The doors are systematically closed unless a train is present at the platform, and incidents involving travellers on the tracks are thus prevented at all times. Traffic is more fluid, and it is possible to increase train frequencies and hence system capacity. By creating a separation between the track (the tunnel) and the platforms, platform doors lead to major cost savings in terms of air conditioning or heating. In all cases, platform doors provide fast returns on investment.
In Seville, the main technical challenge lay in the fact that the signalling system had not been designed to provide sufficient information to enable installation of automatic door opening and closing systems. Faiveley thus stood in a class of its own because it was able to propose a complete solution based on its railway expertise. The Company has developed and implemented electronic control systems that enable safety dialogue between trains and the wayside, by determining the presence, position and stopping of each train, using autonomous equipment installed on the trains and alongside the tracks.
The Seville metro line has 17 stations, each equipped with 12 doors on either side of the track.
There are only a very small number of companies worldwide with experience in the railway field and able to provide complete platform door systems. Faiveley Transport, whose reputation for quality train doors and their peripheral systems has been established over 70 years, has placed the platform door offer at the core of its marketing strategy. The Company has been providing platform screens since 1989, and in the recent past it has been awarded contracts for the Milan line 5, Rome line C and Helsinki projects.
Faiveley’s worldwide presence, combined with an innovative services offer, enables it to take the specific constraints of this type of installation in its stride.
Platform doors, an essential element in implementation of automatic metros, are much more than an efficient technical solution; they are also one of the major quality aspects of an urban metro system. Faiveley sets itself apart from its competitors by providing further options if the owner so wishes (passenger information, advertising display units, lighting solutions, etc.) and smart design. At the latest INNOTRANS show in Berlin, the Company presented an advanced example of the current offer in terms of platform doors.
