SOURIAU – SUNBANK Connection Technologies
Hermetic fibre-optic feedthru
Today, thanks to an exclusive ceramic sealing process developed by Souriau’s US subsidiary, PA&E, SOURIAU offers the only lightweight, truly hermetic fibre optic feedthru, extending the conventional uses of fibre optics to applications that require fibre optic performance and a high level of hermeticity such as space and aviation applications (embedded control-command data transfer, tank filling and level monitoring) and scientific applications (particle accelerators).
Until now, engineers have been unable to use fibre-optic technology in applications that require total hermeticity. Conventional glass seals aren’t compatible with fibre optic applications as the heat required to melt glass in the sealing process will damage the fibre. Traditional potting processes have been used in some instances, but components produced with this process have limited lifetimes and poor hermetic performance.
This innovative new interconnect solution uses PA&E’s polycrystalline ceramic-to-metal sealing technology. This ceramic has a lower melting temperature than glass, so delicate optical fibers won’t be damaged in the sealing process and it allows the feedthrus to achieve a leak rate of less than or equal to 1X10-9 cc/sec He at one atmospheric differential pressure.
The new hermetic fibre-optic feedthrus are compatible with standard FC/PC or FC/APC interfaces. They are also intermatable with the 38999 series III connector range with Elio® fibre-optic contacts, developed by Souriau. The Elio® technology in the aluminium and composite 38999 series III connectors has been selected by Airbus for the avionics and the IFE network in the A380 programme according to the ARINC 801 standard.
The feedthrus are available in 1, 2 and 4-contact versions and are available with aluminium or titanium housings, providing weight savings of up to 40% when compared to stainless steel alternatives.
Intended for harsh environments, the hermetic fibre-optic feedthroughs are guaranteed to show no performance degradation from – 65 °C to + 125 °C. Their maximum continuous use temperature is 200 °C.
With this new hermetic fibre-optic feedthru Souriau is providing its customers with a new, innovative connector solution that combines hermeticity and EMI protection in a lightweight package for a new generation of applications.
