PT Pertamina and Halliburton Sign MOU on Advanced Well Construction

PT Pertamina and Halliburton have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to assess the deployment of advanced well construction and stimulation technologies in Indonesia. The agreement focuses on selected onshore assets and aims to improve drilling efficiency, stimulation effectiveness and overall production performance.

Evaluation of Advanced Stimulation Techniques
Under the MOU, the companies intend to evaluate multi-stage hydraulic fracturing and acid stimulation technologies tailored to Indonesian reservoir conditions. Multi-stage fracturing enables targeted stimulation across multiple intervals within a horizontal or deviated wellbore, improving reservoir contact and hydrocarbon recovery.

Acid stimulation treatments are designed to enhance permeability in carbonate or sandstone formations by dissolving formation damage or enlarging pore channels. When properly engineered, these techniques can increase production rates and improve well productivity in mature or tight reservoirs.

Advanced Cementing and Well Integrity
The scope also includes advanced cementing services to enhance zonal isolation and long-term well integrity. Effective cement placement is critical to preventing fluid migration, ensuring safe operations and maintaining regulatory compliance. Improved cement evaluation and placement techniques can reduce remediation requirements and non-productive time.

Closed-Loop Automation and AI Integration
The collaboration will assess the potential application of closed-loop automation and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in drilling and fracturing operations. Closed-loop systems use real-time data acquisition and automated control algorithms to adjust drilling parameters, fluid systems and pumping schedules.

AI-enabled analytics can optimize rate of penetration, fracture design parameters and fluid performance based on historical and real-time operational data. These approaches aim to reduce variability, improve stimulation consistency and enhance production outcomes.

Expanding Unconventional Capabilities in Indonesia
The MOU strengthens Halliburton’s unconventional completions presence in Indonesia while supporting Pertamina’s objective of maximizing asset value in domestic fields. By combining global unconventional methodologies with localized reservoir data, the companies aim to improve stimulation performance and operational efficiency in Indonesia’s onshore oil and gas sector.

The agreement represents a technical evaluation framework rather than a final investment decision, providing a structured basis for assessing the applicability of advanced drilling and completion technologies under local geological and operational conditions.
