2,000 t/d OCC Line Starts Up in Karawang

Indah Kiat Pulp & Paper TBK, a member of Asia Pulp & Paper (APP), has started up a new OCC (Old Corrugated Containers) processing line and reject treatment system at its Karawang mill in Jawa Barat, Indonesia. The line, supplied by ANDRITZ, is designed for a capacity of 2,000 tons per day and converts mixed recovered paper into fiber stock for testliner production.

High-Capacity OCC Processing
The new line processes mixed OCC into high-quality recycled fiber suitable for testliner applications. With a design capacity of 2,000 t/d, the system supports large-scale packaging paper production, where consistent fiber quality and process stability are critical for mechanical strength and surface properties.

At the core of the installation is a FibreFlow Drum Prime pulper. Drum pulping technology enables continuous fiberizing of recovered paper while facilitating early removal of coarse contaminants. This approach can reduce fiber damage compared with high-intensity pulping systems and improve yield in recycled fiber applications.

Downstream cleaning and sorting stages further refine the stock preparation process. These stages are designed to remove contaminants such as plastics, metals, and non-fibrous materials, contributing to stable operation of the paper machine and consistent product quality.

Integrated Reject Treatment System
In addition to fiber processing, the project includes a reject treatment system designed to manage residual waste streams efficiently. The scope of supply comprises equipment for reject compaction and a single-shaft shredder.

Reject compaction reduces the volume of separated contaminants, facilitating handling and disposal. The single-shaft shredder ensures uniform particle size, supporting reliable dewatering and controlled discharge. Effective reject handling is essential in high-capacity OCC lines, where contamination levels can vary significantly depending on input material quality.

By integrating fiber recovery and reject management in a coordinated system, the installation supports both operational efficiency and resource optimization.

Strategic Context and Regional Production
The start-up at the Karawang mill represents a significant step in the collaboration between Indah Kiat Pulp & Paper TBK and ANDRITZ. For Southeast Asian packaging markets, where demand for recycled containerboard continues to grow, high-capacity OCC lines play a central role in securing raw material supply from recovered paper streams.

The 2,000 t/d system strengthens the mill’s ability to process mixed OCC at scale while maintaining fiber quality for testliner production. Through advanced pulping, cleaning, and reject treatment technologies, the installation supports efficient recycled paper manufacturing aligned with sustainability and high-output industrial production requirements.
